the spike on bridge traffic to levels we haven't seen in years. >> reporter: this kind of bay area traffic is something mary masoten is seeing more than ever. >> pretty much if i'm not leaving my house by 6:00 in the morning, it's crazy out there. >> reporter: she drives her prius to work from richmond to brisbane every day and that trip includes crossing the bay bridge. >> when you have a big chunk of water out there you live with it. >> reporter: in december we learned she shared that part of her commute with an extra 70,000 cars and trucks an increase of more than 2%. for all seven state owned bay area bridges, traffic grew by more than 195,000 vehicles. >> that's particularly interesting because we've had slow but steady declines in toll bridge traffic every year since 2003-2004. >> as for the sudden u turn, sam godwell says the economy

could be the driving force. >> maybe more commuters, maybe more deliveries being made across the bridge. >> reporter: officials say traffic also seems to be growing in and out of silican valley. while the extra gridlock might be raising drivers blood pressure, it might be helping too. >> it may be more people going to work. >> reporter: is that what you think? >> i think so. drivers should not expect any new toll increases in the immediate future. the federal government released a bullish job reports today providing one of the strongest signs yet that the economy is headed in the right direction. take a look at these numbers here, the labor department reported 243,000 new jobs were added in january. the economy has now added an average of 200,000 jobs a month for the past three months. and all of those new jobs,

well, they are translating to a national unemployment rate that has now dropped to 8.3%. that is the lowest since february of 2009 which was president obama's first full month in august. and that news, boy it had a great impact on wall street today. the nasdaq picked up 45 points and closed at its highest mark in years. the dow finished up 156. tonight rita williams introduces us to a woman who was out of work for two years and rita tells us how she was able finally able to get hired. >> reporter: sally magnus is thrilled to be a statistic. the mother of two is newly

hired at mink chiropractic. filling one of those 230,000 jobs last month. she's seen a steady increase in business last year enough to hire magnus a cal graduate to manage the office and eventually do bookkeeping. >> i've been growing so much that i can't answer the phones to answer questions, so i needed that help in the office. >> reporter: magnus says she and her husband a teacher struggled after she lost her job after 20 years in print advertising. so she enrolled at menlo park job training to learn a new trade, medical asis at a -- assistant. >> i was looking to find something that was growing.

allowed to see his son but it was denied. >> i miss my son terribly and he misses me. >> right now we have a little who has no idea where his daddy. >> reporter: lopez had joined the request for visitation rights. the judge did grant an expedited here for next week. former lieu lieutenant harper claims the department repeatedly overlooked him for promotion because he's african american. the jury found in the city's favor, harper had asked for more than a half a million dollars in lost wages and benefits on top of damages for emotional distress. new video to show you right now of a motor vehicle in oakland that left three people hospitalized. it happened on 98th and eve. witnesses on the scene tell us the driver of a van ran a stop

sign and was hit by a hell's angel motorist. three people were taken to the hospital, including a little girl. there were three more shootings in oakland tonight bringing the total by our account to just eight in the past 36 hours. violent even by oakland standards. rita williams has been talking to residents, tourists and police and she's at the hospital where the wounded end up. >> reporter: that's if they survive. two victims the last two days did not. the surge has cops and citizens wondering what's going on. mcarthur and high street, police find a bullet riddled van tonight, nobody in it. a victim's mom calls an ambulance for her injured son. h he will live, unlike one of the people shot in this jaguar. or a man left dead on the

restaurants winding down at the end of the workweek. walnut creek's police chief said there would be an increase of police presence. they seem to be very low key. but yet the night is young. >> you get the conflicting issue and they're going to bud heads. >> reporter: this is the exclusive video we obtained showing a fight at 1:30 last sunday morning. as the bars were closing, three separate fights broke out in the downtown. nine people were arrested, one man was severely beaten. >> there are too many idiots on the street to be perfectly frank. they need to be more mellow. >> reporter: public drunkenness and violent have been happening far too often downtown, one resident says the 72 bars and restaurants in the area need to do more. >> they really need to do a better job policing their patrons, that's their job.

fueled too many i -- too many incidents of violence downtown. the owners will face the city council on tuesday. the contractor that was building a trench that collapsed died this morning. the fremont based company did not have workers compensation insurance. a fairfield mother who was convicted in the death of four young children walked out of jail tonight. shatara james was released after a judge sentenced her to 10 months probation. she had been convicted for the deaths of her three young children and 8 -month-old niece. they died in a fire. james had left the children in the house with candles burning

and the children apparently knocked over one of those candles. former san francisco crime lab technician, debra madden will have her day in court. she will be tried in federal court for allegedly stealing cocaine in the crime lab. her attorney has questioned why federal prosecutors are going after madden. san francisco police say they have found the men responsible for stealing apple products in a series of delivery truck burglaries. between december and january, eduardo alvarez, jose reyes broke into fed ex trucks and stole merchandise. the men were arrested in a traffic stop after officers spotted their van. now to the presidential campaign in tomorrow's caucus in nevada. in the republican contest, the

latest poll suggests another big rim for mitt romney. ken pritchett spend the day with voters in reno and tells us the caucus may provide a surprise. >> reporter: mitt romney made brief stops in reno and sparks and then joined ron paul and newt gingrich where they campaigned in or near las vegas. a shake up at the bottom of the field. romney leads with 50% to gingrich's 25%. rick santorum dropped to single digits as ron paul rose to 15%. >> inthe polls underestimate his support because it is a far more grass roots effort. >> reporter: hertz says ron paul may rally support. >> reporter: susan matengale is one of the many volunteers campaigning for ron paul today.

following two days of intense pressure the susan g. komen foundation reversed it's decision today and announced it will not pull funding from planned parenthood after all. alli e rasmus reports on the backlash and say it's working in its favor. >> reporter: there's three offices of planned parenthood, none of them have asked for donations from susan g. komen but they are now benefiting

foundation says her local chapter also opposed the decision to cut donations for planned parenthood. she also fears her office will get fewer donations. the damage to the komen foundation is pretty much already done. ron chapman writes i know quite a few people that will never support komen again. there are many other foundations that are not -- -- stow was beaten outside of dodger stadium 10 months ago. the giant fan and his family file suit against the dodgers last year. they claimed by reducing security at dodger stadium in 2008, the l.a. team created an environment

that allowed that attack to happen. the dodgers owners have since filed for bankruptcy protection. lance armstrong says he's gratified that no charges came out of a three year investigation. officials were looking into whether armstrong was part of a doping program along with his teammates. armstrong maintains h maintains -- he has never used performance enhancement drugs. caltrans is planning the closure of the upper deck. electronic signs have already been posted including this one in emeryville. the upper deck of the bridge is set to be closed all of president's day weekend from february 17th to february 21st. the closure will allow crews to build a detour near the toll

silican valley is mourning the loss of a high tech pioneer tonight. steve appleton died when a small plane he was piloting crashed in boise this morning. appleton was flying solo when he crashed shortly after take off. his coworkers say he worked very hard to become ceo. >> the american dream.

we have new information tonight involving a fraud case that we've been following for nearly four years now. in federal court in oakland today, ronald nelson pleaded guilty as did his second wife edith and two former mortgage workers. they are accused of a mortgage fraud scream. one of nelson's daughter from his first marriage sames she was one of their victims and she blames his second wife. >> she's the main person. anyone who doesn't separate themselves from her are going to get what she gets just by association. i think he's been willing to stand by her. the nelsons were involved in more than 60 fraudulent mortgageless. now they face more than 40 years in federal prison. a man accused of driving

his car into a nummi tunnel pled not guilty today to dui chargeless. scott mitchell was arrested, they say he drove right into the tunnel. investigators say mitchell's blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit. mitchell is due back in court for a pretrial conference. in news of the world, in syria, thousands of people rallied in the city of homes today. mortar shells fell on the city after these pictures were taken. 200 people were killed and thousands of others injured. this appears to be the deadliest incident in the 11 month uprising. more violent clashes erupted between police and protesters in cairo. six people have been killed since wednesday's soccer riot. now many are demanding their military leaders step down. for their part some of the
